Fashion’s Waste Problem Has a Solution – We’re Building It

The future of fashion isn’t in landfills, it’s in innovation. Landfills 2 Landmarks brings together global leaders, policymakers, and change-makers in Kempinski Hotel Accra, Ghana, to turn textile waste into opportunity, drive economic growth, and build a truly circular fashion industry.

A Global Turning Point

Every week, over 15 million used garments arrive in Accra, supporting 2.5 million livelihoods and contributing $29.5 million in annual tax revenue.

While this trade provides economic value, Ghana has become an unintended waste management hub for the global fashion industry. Without proper recycling infrastructure, low-quality imports accumulate in landfills, block drainage systems, and pollute water bodies. Common disposal methods—burning and landfill dumping—release microplastics, toxins, and greenhouse gases, worsening environmental and climate challenges.

The debate is no longer about whether second-hand clothing is essential, but how it can be redefined to create both economic and environmental value
